Soffit and Fascia Calculator

Enter how long the eaves and rakes are and how wide the soffit is, from the wall to the back of the fascia. The calculator works out the soffit area, how many panels you need when each panel is cut into strips across the overhang, and the pieces of fascia and receiving channel along the same run.

Example values are filled in. Replace them with your own measurements.

The total length of all eaves (the level roof edges), measured along the wall or the fascia.

The total length of soffit along sloped gable edges, if they have soffit. Leave 0 if the rakes are closed with trim only.

From the face of the wall to the back of the fascia, measured level. Soffit panels are cut to this length and run across it.

Soffit panel

The length of one fascia cover piece. CertainTeed lists its aluminum 6 in and 8 in ribbed fascia in 12 ft lengths.

  • Hip corners are mitred and take extra cuts; channel and fascia joints overlap. Corner pieces and overlaps are not counted, so add a piece or two per corner.
  • Nails, H-bars at corners, vent openings, the fascia board behind the cover and trim coil for wrapping are not counted.

How it works

The calculator adds the eaves and rakes into one soffit run, cuts the soffit into strips one panel exposure wide and counts how many strips each panel gives.

Soffit run = Eaves + Rakes  ·  Soffit area = Soffit run × Soffit width
Strips = ⌈ Soffit run ÷ Panel exposure ⌉
Panels = ⌈ Strips ÷ ⌊ Panel length ÷ Soffit width ⌋ ⌉  ·  Cartons = ⌈ Panels ÷ Panels per carton ⌉
Fascia pieces = ⌈ Soffit run ÷ Fascia length ⌉
F-channel = J-channel = ⌈ Soffit run ÷ Channel length ⌉

⌈ ⌉ rounds up, ⌊ ⌋ rounds down: you can only cut whole strips from a panel.

Why panels and not just area

Vinyl soffit panels run from the wall to the fascia, across the overhang, so each panel is cut into strips as long as the soffit is wide. How much of each panel is used depends on that width: a 12 ft panel gives exactly 12 strips for a 12 in soffit and 9 for a 16 in soffit, but only 8 for an 18 in soffit, and for a 20 in soffit 7 strips with a 4 in offcut. The area is still shown, because vents, paint and labor are often figured from it.

Fascia and channels

The fascia cover follows the same run as the soffit. Along the wall the soffit panels sit in a receiver – F-channel, or a J-channel with slots cut in the nailing flange. At the fascia side they rest in a J-channel or on the fascia itself, depending on the system; choose “none” if no channel is used there.

Worked example in words

A house has 80 ft of eaves with a 12 in soffit. CertainTeed Universal Triple 4” covers 12 in per panel and is 12 ft long, so the soffit needs 80 strips and each panel gives 12: 6.7, so 7 panels – one carton of 16. The fascia takes 80 ÷ 12 = 6.7, so 7 pieces of 12 ft, and the F-channel and J-channel 80 ÷ 12.5 = 6.4, so 7 pieces each.

What is not included

Nails, H-bars at hip corners, extra pieces for mitres, the wood fascia board itself and trim coil are not counted. Attic ventilation – how much vented soffit you need – is not calculated here; follow the roof or attic maker and local code.

Common mistakes

  • Counting soffit panels by area alone. Panels are cut across the overhang; a 12 ft panel gives 12 strips for a 12 in soffit but only 8 for an 18 in soffit, and offcuts in between are waste.
  • Using the full panel width instead of the exposure. Panels interlock, so only the exposure covers the soffit.
  • Measuring the soffit width to the front of the fascia. The panel ends in a channel or groove behind the fascia; measure to the back of the fascia.
  • Forgetting the rake soffits on gable ends. If the gable overhangs are boxed in, add their length to the rakes.
  • Ordering fascia for the eaves only when the rakes get fascia too. The fascia run is the same as the soffit run here; add any rake fascia without soffit separately.

Assumptions and limits

  • The soffit width is the same everywhere. Measure separately and add the results if eaves and rakes are of different width.
  • Panels run across the overhang and every strip is cut to the soffit width. Offcuts shorter than one strip are not reused.
  • Fascia, F-channel and J-channel run the full soffit length once, without joint overlaps or corner waste.
  • Vented and solid panels of one profile cover the same width. How much ventilation an attic needs is a design question for the roof or attic maker and local code.

Frequently asked questions

How many soffit panels do I need?

Divide the soffit length by the panel exposure to get the number of strips, then divide by the strips you can cut from one panel. For 80 ft of 12 in soffit with CertainTeed Triple 4 (12 in exposure, 12 ft long) that is 80 strips at 12 per panel, so 7 panels.

How much does a carton of vinyl soffit cover?

It depends on the profile. CertainTeed's catalog lists Universal Triple 4" at 16 panels and 192 sq ft per carton and Double 5" at 20 panels and 2 squares (200 sq ft) per carton. Because panels are cut to the soffit width, you will use more panel than the area suggests.

What is the difference between J-channel and F-channel for soffit?

Both hold the cut end of a soffit panel. F-channel is nailed to the wall with its flange flat on the wall; CertainTeed lists its F-channel "for use as soffit receiver". J-channel is often used along the fascia side. Some systems let the panel rest on the fascia instead, so the J-channel is optional here.

How long are fascia and channel pieces?

In CertainTeed's catalog, J-channel and F-channel come in 12 ft 6 in lengths and aluminum ribbed fascia in 12 ft lengths. Check the pieces you buy and enter their length.
