Measuring outside
Measure fences along the fence line and walls along the base of the house. For a house with several wall sections or gables, measure each part separately and add them up. Note gates, doors and windows as you go so you can subtract them.
What is and isn’t included
These calculators estimate the main material only – pickets or wall siding. Posts, rails, trim, corners and fasteners need their own estimate, and post spacing and depth are design decisions for your plans, the product maker and your local building department.
